Supporting a person with complex or special support needs requires more than following a plan. It requires careful assessment, respectful communication, sound judgement and genuine collaboration with the person, their family, carers, colleagues and health professionals.

This practical course develops the skills needed to provide person-centred support under the supervision of a relevant professional. Participants will learn how to identify and prioritise complex needs, recognise co-existing issues and understand how those needs may affect the person’s wellbeing, relationships, independence and quality of life.

The course explores how to work collaboratively with the person to establish meaningful goals, identify appropriate supports and develop an individualised plan that reflects their choices, strengths, rights and priorities. Participants will also learn how to coordinate services, clarify roles and responsibilities, monitor whether supports are working and contribute to plan reviews when needs or circumstances change.

Important areas of practice are addressed throughout the course, including professional boundaries, consultation with specialists, risk, safeguarding, documentation, restrictive practices, human rights and the role of the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission.

By the end of the course, participants will be better equipped to support people with complex needs in a way that is coordinated, lawful, respectful and focused on achieving the best possible quality of life.
