Working respectfully with people from diverse backgrounds is not simply about knowing the right words. It requires self-awareness, curiosity, cultural humility and the ability to communicate in ways that build trust, safety and inclusion.
This practical course helps participants examine their own perspectives, assumptions and unconscious biases while developing the confidence to work more effectively with people from different social, cultural, religious, linguistic and personal backgrounds.
Participants will explore cultural awareness, cultural safety and cultural competence, and consider how identity, power, discrimination, trauma, exclusion and social structures can affect a person’s experience of services and workplaces. The course includes a strong focus on respectful engagement with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and communities, including the impact of western systems and structures.
Through reflection, examples and workplace-based activities, participants will learn how to adapt verbal and non-verbal communication, respond to language barriers, work appropriately with interpreters and address misunderstandings sensitively.
The course also examines human rights, discrimination law, worker responsibilities and practical ways to create environments where people feel respected, heard and included.
By the end of the course, participants will be better equipped to communicate across difference, challenge bias, resolve misunderstandings and contribute to safer, more inclusive workplaces and services.
