Lived experience can be one of the most powerful tools in mental health peer work – when it is used with care, purpose and strong professional boundaries.

This course supports learners to understand how their own lived or carer experience can be applied safely and respectfully in mental health peer work. Learners explore how lived experience can build trust, reduce stigma, support recovery and strengthen connection with people accessing mental health services.

The course also focuses on the practical skills needed to work in a peer role, including safe self-disclosure, maintaining boundaries, communicating with empathy, understanding organisational expectations, protecting privacy and recognising when and how to share personal stories in a way that supports the client, not the worker.

Learners will develop a clear understanding of how to use lived experience as a professional strength while working within policies, procedures, ethical responsibilities and the values of recovery-oriented practice.
