A strong counselling relationship does not happen by accident. It begins with careful preparation, clear communication, professional boundaries and a genuine understanding of what the client needs from the counselling process.

This practical course develops the skills required to establish a safe, respectful and collaborative counselling relationship from the very first session. Participants learn how to review existing client information, gather relevant information sensitively and use a structured, client-centred approach that responds to each person’s needs, concerns and expectations.

The course explores how to explain the counselling service clearly, identify and respond to client anxieties, clarify expectations and establish shared commitment to the helping relationship. Participants also learn how to recognise issues that fall outside their professional role and take appropriate referral or reporting action.

Through practical activities, examples and guided reflection, participants will build confidence in working collaboratively with clients to identify priorities, explore suitable counselling approaches and develop an agreed plan for moving forward. The course also addresses documentation, disclosure requirements and the importance of recording agreements clearly and professionally.

By the end of the course, participants will be better equipped to create counselling relationships built on trust, clarity, respect, safety and shared responsibility.
